The Benefits of Exercise for Weight Loss

Diet alone may help you lose weight, but exercise is an important piece of the puzzle. 

In our last blog, our medical weight loss experts in Arlington, VA went over the importance of both diet and exercise for weight loss. While dieting alone is much effective than exercising alone, exercise is still a very important piece of the weight loss puzzle. The following is a list of some of the benefits of exercise for weight loss:

#1. It will help to curb your appetite. 

Did you know that exercising can actually make you feel less hungry? Exercise actually pulls out some of the fat and glucose that has been stored in your body, which causes your blood glucose levels to remain even.

#2. It will help you burn more calories. 

Not only does exercise burn calories by itself, but the more muscle you build, the more calories you’ll burn, even when you are at rest. Muscle actually requires energy just to maintain itself, which means that you burn calories just to maintain your muscle. This is why strength training and cardio is a more effective exercise program than cardio alone.

#3. It will prevent you from losing muscle. 

Studies have found that when you lose weight through dieting alone, only about 75 percent of it is fat loss and the rest is muscle loss. This decreases the efficiency in which your body burns calories. However, when you exercise, it actually helps you gain muscle, which means that you’ll be burning just fat instead of muscle and fat.
